This Naturewise Conservation Holidays project is located at the Woodlands Historic Park, a short 20 minute drive from Melbourne. Although within proximity to Melbourne's modern and urbanised setting, the park provides a fascinating historic glimpse of the landscapes and wildlife seen by European settlers in the 1840s. Four hundred hectares of Red-gum Grassy Woodlands, known as the Back Paddock, have been fenced off as a Nature Reserve and identified as suitable habitat for the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot. The species is now considered extinct in Victoria's wild due to predation by foxes and cats, and disappearance of 99 per cent of the state's native grasslands. Conservation volunteers and Parks Victoria have teamed up to reinstate a population to the Back Paddock. This project focuses on saving the Eastern Barred Bandicoot from extinction through a number of exciting hands-on conservation activities. You will work closely with their environmental experts to set up traps, collect critical data on captured animals, and assist in their release back into the wild.
