Very Melbourne

  • Very Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Start at under-bridge floating bar Ponyfish Island then head back to dry land at Arbory Bar, on the banks of the Yarra River next to Flinders Street Station. Ask to be pointed towards the station underpass and follow signs to cafe-lined Degraves Street. Just over Flinders Lane in Centre Place you'll see Shandong Mama Mini: pocket-sized place, perfect dumplings. Spark up with coffee at Dukes Coffee Roasters, then continue along Flinders Lane to all-day mod-Asian canteen Supernormal. Turn right into Hosier Lane and check out the street art on the way to Spanish MoVida and its next-door bar. 1km

  1. Ponyfish Island
A floating bar under a footbridge and an easy place to eat (nachos, toasties), drink (Ponyfish lager, of course) and spy (mythical) ponyfish swimming by.
  2. Arbory Bar and Eater
Outdoors (but sheltered), open from breakfast to late and overlooking the Yarra River. Find it from the river or via the stairs spiralling down from Swanston Street.
  3. Shandong Mama Mini
So fresh and such finesse! Dumpling skins are made to different thicknesses to suit different fillings. Thin? Seafood. Thick? Meat. Centre Place and nearby Degraves Street are lined with eateries and worth a wander.
  4. Duke's Coffee Roasters
Many Melbourne cafes use Dukes' meticulously sourced and roasted coffee. Top spot in this beautiful cafe? The nook for two at the rear.
  5. Supernormal
Casual all-day dining from local legend Andrew McConnell with elements of Japanese, Chinese and Korean food spun through a creative Melbourne lens.
  6. MoVida
Chef Frank Camorra spurred Melbourne's Spanish scene with food that's soulful and innovative (anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet). Check out Hosier Lane street art as you wander in; consider also MoVida NextDoor.
