Mozart was about to hit the road, when he wrote his Symphony No.34. He was sick of his home town, Salzburg and had a bright future waiting for him in Vienna and beyond. Experience this liberating piece from the symphonic master, which sparkles with hopeful optimism and a sense of freedom.

South Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s Mannequin takes the orchestra into a world of artificial intelligence, with a powerful, evocatively contemporary work, inspired by E.T.A Hoffman’s story ‘The Sandman’, before one of the most engaging live performers of his generation, French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet brings Ravel’s jazzy Piano Concerto back to Melbourne.

With its swirling clouds of music vividly depicting dancing couples moving through time and space, Ravel’s intended ballet turned concert piece, La Valse then settles the MSO into a darker mode – a brooding, yet poignant reflection on the place and times of the French composer’s life and end of the century Vienna.
