Stories from Detention - They Cannot Take the Sky is an exhibition that explores personal stories from people who have sought or are seeking, asylum and refuge in Australia.

Stories from Detention - They Cannot Take the Sky is an exhibition that explores personal stories from people who have sought or are seeking, asylum and refuge in Australia.

Through personal perspective, explore one of the most complex issues of our time. The exhibition features people who now live in Australia with permanent residency, some who are on temporary visas, and others who remain in detention on Manus Island.

Hear about the reasons people flee their homes, their perilous journeys in search of safety, the banality of daily life in detention, and the afterlives - both lived and hoped for - of people resettling in Australia.

Developed by Behind the Wire – a not for profit organisation that works to document the stories of men, women and children who have sought asylum in Australia – the exhibition continues the Immigration Museum’s mission to explore how migration and diversity have shaped the society in which we live.

Behind the Wire is an award-winning oral history project documenting stories from detention.
