High Country

  • Mitta Mitta River, High Country, Victoria, Australia

Cool off during the summer months in the lakes and rivers of the High Country or hit the white water in canoes and kayaks. From swimming, boating and sailing to water-skiing, kayaking and canoeing, the High Country offers an endless array of water-based fun.

Summertime fun
Swimming is a big part of life in the High Country. Camp out with the family beside the region's pristine waterways and splash about with the kids on those hot summer afternoons. Join locals and visitors alike and dive into tranquil lakes and quiet rivers, mountain streams or water holes.

Cruising rivers and lakes
Grab your oars and canoe or kayak around the waters of Lake Eildon, Lake Catani on Mount Buffalo, and the Ovens and Buckland rivers around Bright. Made famous by The Castle, Lake Eildon is bigger than Sydney Harbour and popular with house boaters, wakeboarders and water skiers alike.

Try your hand at dragon boating at Rocky Valley Dam near Falls Creek and catch the spectacle of professionals competing every January.

Building up speed on rivers and rapids
Enjoy summer on the beautiful Howqua and Delatite rivers near Mansfield. Observe the ratings guides and canoe and kayak or increase the adrenaline and go white-water rafting on a challenging stretch of river. Be aware that high water means high rapids and these should only be tackled by experienced paddlers.

For unforgettable white-water rafting experiences, head for the Mitta Mitta River, which runs through the Alpine National Park. Raft along a spectacular granite ravine, past 18 kilometres of rock formations through numerous grade three and four rapids. The King is another excellent white water rafting river, with over 40 rapids from grade 2 to grade 4.
