High Country

  • Paragliding in Bright, High Country, Victoria, Australia

Get your dose of high-octane excitement in the High Country with adventure activities including rock-climbing, hang gliding and skydiving. Clamber over the High Country's iconic rocky outcrops, try hang gliding off the rim of The Gorge, or get a rush jumping out of a moving plane.

Rock-climbing
Clamber over the High Country's iconic rocky outcrops, putting into practice your training or learning the ropes with experienced operators.

Mount Buffalo – adventure paradise
Head to Mount Buffalo, a mecca for climbers and abseilers. The views are unforgettable and beginners and advanced adventurers will find a chunk of rock on the sheer granite face of The Gorge, which boasts excellent single and multi-pitch climbing. The North Wall is the place for aid climbs.

Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek
Climb indoors and outdoors at Mount Buller. Get tuition from LaTrobe University on its indoor climbing wall and outdoor abseiling tower, and practice on summit rock faces and behind Chamois Tun. You can even try ice climbing in winter.

Explore the small boulder areas in Hotham's resort area, and try the climbing site at Mount Smyth (watch for loose rock). Abseil at Dinner Plain, ice climb at Australia Drift (below Hotham) and mountaineer on Mount Feathertop.

Beginners will happily abseil at Falls Creek and at the site below the Howmans Gap Alpine Centre. There's limited top rope climbing at Strawberry Saddle.

Climbing from the lowlands
From Beechworth, try single pitch climbing at Mount Pilot and Mount Stanley's granite areas. Abseil at Mount Pilot, at the Beechworth Gorge, and out at Eldorado.

Skydiving
Test your mettle by signing up for a parachute jump and experience the rush of adrenaline and spectacular aerial views of Victoria's High Country at 220 kilometres an hour.

With some of the best weather and scenery for skydiving, the sleepy town of Euroa, nestled amongst the Strathbogie foothills, is one of Victoria's favourite skydiving destinations. With services catering for everyone, from beginners to veterans, and the best safety record in the state, why not make a day of it and enjoy the thrill of a lifetime.

Hang-gliding
Mount Buffalo provides a spectacular platform for hang-gliding. Ask a local adventure operator to show you how to launch yourself off the rim of The Gorge and take advantage of the up-draft air currents, like the local population of eagles.

The airfield at Porepunkah near Bright offers powered hang-gliding, ultralight flying and scenic light aircraft flights. If you are serious about gliding, the instructors at Bright and Porepunkah offer full certificate courses in addition to introductory flights. Alternatively, Australia's largest gliding centre, The Gliding Club of Victoria, is based at Benalla Airport and takes visitors on joy flights.

Caving
Experience Mt Buffalo from below on a caving adventure. Explore the winding underground river cave, which was created by giant granite boulders. Walk, climb and swim through the cave tunnels, taking in waterfalls, plunge pools and rapids.
