Aboriginal Victoria

Great Ocean Road

  • Aboriginal guide at Torquay Beach, Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia

Travel down to the vast western region of Victoria populated by the Gunditjmara people and discover a treasure trove of ancient Indigenous stories and customs.

In the round
Make your way to Tower Hill, a nature reserve nestled inside an extinct volcano near Warrnambool and a site of significance for the Gunditjmara people. Take a walk with an Aboriginal guide to see native wildlife up close, get a glimpse into traditional ways of life, and learn about bush foods and medicines.

Continue along the Great Ocean Road to Lake Condah, near Portland. Recently granted National Heritage listing due to evidence of a permanent Aboriginal village, the finding exploded the myth that all Indigenous people of Australia were nomadic. Go on a tour with a local aboriginal guide and see the remains of stone houses used by the original inhabitants of the area along with the remnants of a large and complex eel trap system.
