The gardens were established in the early 1860s. Specimens of trees and plants were donated by famous green-thumb Baron Ferdinand von Mueller as well as the curators of Ballarat and Geelong Gardens, the State Nursery at Creswick and local nurserymen. The gardens went on to become a popular picnic spot, which they remain today. Historic features include the Courthouse and Police Cottage (1853) and the Queen Victoria Rotunda (1901).

Explore the upper and lower gardens, divided by an embankment running along Cornish Street. Stroll the path around the "Gong", a small lake in the upper section of the gardens, and keep an eye out for fish and waterbirds. In the lower section, visit the historic rotunda and view exotic specimens of trees and shrubs.

Garden facilities include toilets, electric barbecues and playground equipment.
