Parks & gardens

  • Rosaling Park in Bendigo, Goldfields, Victoria, Australia

Journey through the magnificent parks and gardens of the Goldfields, characterised by lush public parks, botanic gardens and historic residences.

Dreams of gold
The gardens of the region embody some of the most interesting strands of nineteenth century thinking and development. Spend a quiet afternoon by Lake Wendouree and soak up the outdoor lifestyle on the shores of Lake Weeroona in Bendigo. Visit the historic conservatory and wander down the leafy paths of Rosalind Park, explore the serene setting of the Classical Chinese Garden, or discover what life was like at the time on a visit to Buda Historic Home & Garden in Castlemaine.

Serenity and education
Underwritten by the world's richest goldfields, the Goldfields gardens were created to be enjoyed by everyone for free. But they were not just for enjoyment, they were intended to educate, and to help spread new species. This was embodied in the beliefs of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, the first director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, who supplied the Goldfields gardens with cuttings and seedlings.
