Mackereths Hedon Farm

At Hedon Farm fine Pyrenees wines are available for sale by the glass, bottle or case, as well as boutique accommodation.The cottage was built c.1865 by Edwin H. Mackereth who came to Australia, firstly, in search of gold. Vines were planted in the 1880's and he supplied award winning wines to the town. One vine remains. Current vines were planted by Mt Avoca Winery.

Restoration of the original cottage started six years ago and since completion is enjoyed as a venue for car rallies, events and weekend stays.

Accommodation includes two bedrooms , new bathroom (one toilet), living room / dining area (OFP). Original kitchen - no oven - includes microwave oven and hotplates. Outside are barbecues and an open-fire pit (fire restrictions apply). Sleeping around the fire pit can be arranged.

So pretty in autumn and spring, sensational at night. Only two kilometres from High Street, Hedon Farm offers a country experience enhanced by an overnight stay in a cottage (with good hamper breakfast) which is steeped in local history.

The house is brick with post and rail supports, the structure of the roof is an amazing compilation of stripped trees with the original iron roofing in the 'Chinese hat' style. There are more than 1000 vines planted 16 years ago on the rear of the cottage and an aged cactus which produces sweetly scented trumpet like white flowers. The cottage is nicely distanced from the main house. Guests have the run of the cottage from Friday evening to Sunday morning. There is a wood fire heater in the living room with overhead fans in bedrooms, living room and casual bar (also OFP).
